MASwings Set To Fly To BIMP-EAGA

KOTA KINABALU, May 25 (Bernama) -- MASwings, which currently operates within Sabah and Sarawak, is expected to commence flights to Brunei and Pontianak, Indonesia, soon.

Its managing director, Datuk Capt Mohd Nawawi Awang, said MASwings had already submitted the proposal to the Transport Ministry for approval.

"Based on the positive response from the ministry, I'm quite confident that the flights from Kota Kinabalu to Brunei and from Kuching to Pontianak (West Kalimantan) will take off on July 1 or in July," he said during a luncheon with the media here today.

He said if these flights were successful, MASwings planned to introduce flights from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau and Tarakan (East Kalimanan) and also from Kuching to Mulu and Brunei in October.

"Plans are also in the pipeline for other destinations within BIMP-EAGA region and we hope to provide flight services from Sabah and Sarawak to major cities such as Palawan and Mindanao in Southern Philippines as well as Manado in Sulawesi, Indonesia, in the future," he said.

BIMP-EAGA stands for Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), a subregional economic cooperation initiative in Southeast Asia.

Mohd Nawawi said MASwings was aware of the need to improve air connectivity within this region as it was constantly discussed among leaders of the BIMP-EAGA member countries at meetings of the grouping.

Apart from that, he said MASwings would also explore the possibility of embarking on international flights from Sabah and Sarawak with immediate focus being on the Kota Kinabalu-Kuala Lumpur and Kuching-Kuala Lumpur sectors.

"These are some of our future plans and we hope we will be able to make it a reality," he said.

On its domestic service, Mohd Nawawi said MASwings would continue its service to rural destinations for the benefit of the people in Sabah and Sarawak.

"We want MASwings to be the icon for Sabah and Sarawak.

"That's why 90 per cent of the almost 1,300 staff of MASwings are locals from Sabah and Sarawak. We operate in Sabah and Sarawak, and it's only fair that we recruit more locals to work for MASwings," he said.

MH's Enrich FFP Discussion Thread

I'm feeling really frustrated about MH Enrich. Here's a letter I've written and will post to MAS on Monday!

QUOTE

Enrich Loyalty & Frequent Flyer Programme
Malaysia Airlines
P.O. Box 8002
Kelana Jaya
46780 Petaling Jaya
Selangor Dahrul Ehsan
Malaysia

cc. Customer Feedback

RE: Claiming of previous Enrich miles for MH XXXXXXX

With the regards on the above, I would like to claim miles from 3 of my previous flights. I understand that claiming of previous Enrich Miles is not permitted but I would like to put my case forward for special consideration. This will also affect my decision whether I should continue flying MAS or switch to another airline.

Prior to my flight to London (MH2 04 Nov 05) from KLIA, I have enquired for Enrich membership at the check-in counter and was then directed by the check-in crew to go to the MAS Customer Care service in the building itself for the application. When I asked for an application form at the Customer Care office, I was told by your staff that they have run out of stock, which I found rather outrageous. I then enquired if I can claim my Enrich Miles later, she firmly told me that it was alright and the procedure is by submitting my boarding pass (and she did not mention about air ticket – which I later found out is required when claiming missing miles!).

With that assurance in mind, I then applied for my membership online at MAS website. This is when my true nightmare started. I was sure that I had submitted the form and reached the confirmation screen. I did not receive ANY reply or any email whatsoever for the next 2 – 3 weeks. So I decided to call up MAS Call Centre from London to see if they have received my application. I was told by the officer that they didn’t receive anything and was told to re-apply. I then re-apply online and ensured that I reached the confirmation screen and I had on purposely pressed submitted a few times to ensure that it will go through. But again, after 3 weeks, I did not receive anything at all. I called the MAS Call Centre again, and was told they didn’t receive my application! At this point I am very frustrated, but continue to fly with MAS on the assurance that my Enrich Miles will be accrued. By this time I had already flew MAS 3 times (KUL-LHR)! On my THIRD ATTEMPT to apply online, I finally received my membership on 5th March, before my flight back to KL (MH3 25th March).

Now I am requesting that for my previous 3 flights Enrich Miles to credit to my account on the above basis where: -

1)	I was given assurance by MAS staff (MAS Customer Care Office in KLIA) that miles can be credited before membership
2)	I have attempted to apply for membership 3 times, and only on the third I got my membership

I hope I will receive a reply as soon as possible before I make my decision to continue flying MAS or to switch to SIA for their KrisFlyer programme. Not only their fares are cheaper, they offer better Miles as I have Citibank Credit Card Reward Points and in future with the American Express SIA Krisflyer Gold Card. At the same time, I have already applied for the membership via their website, and was given my membership number IMMEDIATELY after I had clicked my submit button. But before I decide to switch to SIA, I would like to see if I should continue to fly with MAS, of course with the below flights’ miles credited to my account, I will continue to fly with MAS as I have a reason to.

Below are the 3 flights that I hope you will grant Enrich Miles to my above account. I have also enclosed my boarding tickets and pass.

Class	Flight No	Date	Time
Y	MH 0002	04 Nov 05	2355
Y	MH 0001	25 Jan 06	2200
Y	MH 0002	11 Feb 06	2355

I really hope that I am given the incentive to continue flying MAS, being a Malaysian and wanting to see this company continue flying high and Going Beyond Expectations.

Thanks,

MH XXXXXX

MAS, AirAsia in share swap to rescue ailing flag carrier

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — State-owned Malaysia Airlines (MAS) will swap shares with Asia’s largest budget carrier AirAsia this week in a deal that will see Tan Sri Tony Fernandes help stop the ailing flag carrier from plunging any further into red ink, said industry sources.

The Malaysian Insider understands that the share swap that could see Fernandes getting a 20 per cent stake in the national carrier, will allow both Malaysian carriers to rationalise their fleet, frequencies and destinations within the country and abroad while ensuring MAS returns to becoming a premier airline.

“The deal is on and it should be signed Monday at the earliest,” a source told The Malaysian Insider.

AirAsia’s main shareholders Tune Air Sdn Bhd, owned by Fernandes (picture) and Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, is expected to benefit most from the share swap with MAS as it hold 26.28 per cent of the budget carrier as of July 6, 2011.

The budget carrier’s market capitalisation of RM11 billion yesterday is now two times more than MAS which stands at RM5.3 billion, a decade after Tune Air took over the two-plane operation.

AirAsia closed at RM3.95 per share when the stock market closed yesterday while MAS was at RM1.60 per share.

“This is a deal that has taken such a long time to get done but the current situation benefits Fernandes as MAS is in a bad shape,” another source said, adding that the MAS’s main shareholder Khazanah Nasional Berhad and the AirAsia boss have negotiated five separate times previously.

It is learnt that while MAS moves to reclaim itself as a premier airline, AirAsia X will continue to ply as a long-haul budget carrier while domestic operations will be rationalised with MAS’s Firefly focusing on turbo-prop operations out of the Skypark terminal in Subang.

Firefly began operations out of KLIA this January for flights to east Malaysia, competing with both MAS and AirAsia flights. It also launched a coach service this week for passengers looking for alternatives to the Express Rail Link.

A MAS source also disclosed that the fate of company managing director Tengku Datuk Azmil Zahruddin remains unclear as Fernandes will likely change the management to pull the airline from the brink after its first quarter losses.

It is understood that one of Khazanah’s executive director of investments, Mohd Rashdan Mohd Yusof, could be named as chief operating officer after the share swap. Popularly known as Danny, the former investment banker is the Khazanah representative in the MAS board.

The flag carrier recorded a first quarter net loss of RM242.3 million against a profit of RM310.6 million in the same period a year ago. Azmil took over the reins of the company on August 28, 2009 after the previous chief executive Datuk Seri Idris Jala was made a minister in the Najib administration.

Analysts expect the flag airline to make full-year operating losses for its current financial year ending December 31, in line with higher fuel costs and falling yields. Its sales director Datuk Bernard Francis recently resigned within 24 hours despite having a few more months in his contract.

MAS recently named former managing director Tan Sri Md Nor Md Yusof as its non-executive chairman from August 1, replacing long-serving chairman Tan Sri Munir Majid.

Md Nor managed the airline between 2001 and 2004 where he implemented the widespread asset unbundling (WAU) restructuring of MAS in 2002, involving un-coupling the airline’s massive debts and transferring of the MAS fleet to Penerbangan Malaysia Bhd (PMB).

Despite the WAU and Jala’s tenure which saw MAS return to the black, the lack-lustre financial performance over the past few quarters have given rise to questions about the company’s management’s mantra of running

The share swap could raise the ire of the MAS unions which have been working with limited pay rises under the airlines’ Five Star Value Carrier or Business Transformation Plan 2 but only to see a new shareholder come in to rescue the company again.

Timor Air (BF) has confirmed it signed a memorandum of understanding with a partner carrier and is gearing up for jet operations.
Newly appointed CEO James Stewart Kim, managing director of AvCon Worldwide Ltd., told ATW that the fledgling airline expects to start jet operations in “three to four months time” after entering into an agreement with AvCon, a London-based aviation consulting firm, to manage the business.
BF launched last July in a partnership with Vincent Aviation and had served the daily Dili (DIL)-Darwin (DRW) route. Last week Australian media reported the carrier ceased operations.
However, Kim told ATW that “on the same date” of the reports, “I was signing a deal with a jet operator for a partnership deal to operate jet aircraft.” Kim declined to name the operator “until we complete the regulatory process as per our agreement with our partner carrier. It is a current scheduled carrier of another country,” he said in an email, adding, “We actually planned to keep this jet operation news confidential for a while but we have decided to release it as we do not want any more speculative rumors around.”
The carrier had one SAAB 340B in its fleet, operated by Vincent Aviation.
According to Kim, the Saab 340’s “slower cruising speed” and “limitation of luggage allowance” made it difficult for the carrier to compete against Darwin-based Airnorth’s Embraer E-170 on the DIL-DRW route.
“Timor Air appointed me as its CEO last month and I have completed a deal to operate jet aircraft on Dili-Darwin route as well as other routes we are planning,” he told ATW.
According to a BF statement, initial planned routes will also include DIL-Perth using larger aircraft, which will offer “up to 124 seats in a two-class configuration, including 12 business class seats.” BF said it is also planning to launch services to Denpasar and Singapore.

Gulf Air (GF) is awaiting the result of deliberations in the upper house of Bahrain’s National Assembly after the lower house rejected a government proposal to recapitalize the beleaguered national carrier (ATW Daily News, Dec. 21, 2011).

The proposed bailout of BD664 million ($1.75 billion) came after several years of heavy losses for GF, which has gradually shrunk over the past two decades as former partners Abu Dhabi, Oman and Qatar pulled out of the airline to set up their own carriers.

GF has expressed disappointment at lawmakers’ rejection of the government proposal but noted its referral to the upper house and said it “looked forward to a resolution that will actively address GF’s current position and secure its long-term sustainability.”

The carrier said it had been hit by “a series of unprecedented regional and economic factors,” notably rapidly rising fuel costs and the effects of the Arab Spring. The latter factor has not only resulted in considerable local unrest against Bahrain’s minority Sunni Moslem ruling family and upper classes by the Shia majority population but sharply reduced passenger numbers to and from nearby nations in 2011.
